there is a man with no neck
walking down the sidewalk
he had one years ago they say
but kyphosis had its way
and now he only looks down.
He dresses well like most old men do, and holds a briefcase.
He must have nice shoes too
although I didn’t notice
but he must notice
because he looks at them all day.
His back is bent as a rusted iron fence post,
his neck lost the strength it once had
back when it held his head up proud.
Who knows, he may still be proud
but now he can only look down.
