Therapy (John Wright)

for Philip

You attribute my recovery
to nor trip tyline
its effect on neurotransmitters,
on the a myg dala.

You barely nod towards your worth insisting
on blood levels,
on a therapeutic dose.

While I credit half our success
to the pear tree blossoming white
beyond your left shoulder,

to the wisteria –
its pink flowers hanging
lush and fragrant
over the portico,

to the warmth of your hand.

Discussion Questions:
1. How do you feel by reading this poem from the recovering patient’s perspective?
2. Does this poem change how you perceive the relative contribution of clinical support towards therapy? Does the speaker’s perspective help you form a more meaningful definition for “holistic care?”
